AI Emergence in Education: Exploring Formative Tensions across Scholarly and Popular Discourse
William Cain
Journal of Interactive Learning Research, v34 n2 p239-273 2023
As education, technology, and society become ever more intertwined with emerging forms of artificial intelligence (AI), the need to comprehend the potential consequences of its integration has reached a critical juncture. This study seeks to address this need by exploring emerging, formative tensions in the integration of AI in educational contexts, using a comparative content analysis approach to comb through perspectives from both scholarly and popular discourse. By identifying four main tensions (Human, Ethical, Data, and Systems), the study develops an essential framing for understanding of the challenges and opportunities of AI integration in education. Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of a balanced and nuanced approach that recognizes the potential benefits and risks of AI integration in education.
