Advancing Agency through Conjecturing
Doherty, Kristin
Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12, v116 n8 p592-597 2023
In this article, the author describes strategies to support students in conjecturing in ways that promote their agency. Conjecturing involves justifying (i.e., a practice that promotes epistemic agency and engages students in mathematical reasoning to defend their claims; Bieda & Staples, 2020) by which a conjecture becomes proven, modified, or rejected. Essentially, conjecturing involves students posing an idea about a mathematical rule, pattern, or relationship and using reasoning to prove, disprove, or revise it. In the classroom, the author found that when provided opportunities to conjecture, these captivated students' attention and curiosity, provided them with agency in the learning process, amplified their voices, and deepened their conceptual understanding of content.
