Using "Real-World" Examples to Stimulate Students' Interest in Mathematics. A Good Idea?
Reaburn, Robyn
Australian Mathematics Education Journal, v5 n1 p14-18 2023
It is wildly held belief that one way to interest students in mathematics is to use real-world examples. Mathematics teachers are aware of the lack of interest in mathematics by many students and seek ways to improve their motivation. It seems reasonable to suggest that demonstrating to students the ubiquitous nature of mathematics may help overcome this lack of interest. This paper examines the literature pertaining to the use of real-world examples and suggests, that, unless carefully chosen, their use may not be successful in improving students' motivation.
