Hiring and Cultivating Equity and Social Justice-Committed Community College Presidential Assistants
Harper, Jordan
New Directions for Community Colleges, n202 p77-88 Sum 2023
Presidential assistants are important and trusted staff members to the president and the campus community at large. Despite their importance, little is known about the day-to-day of their jobs and how they may help advance equity and social justice goals and priorities at the community college level. This chapter attempts to rectify this gap through document analysis of publicly available job announcements and descriptions for presidential assistants. Thereafter, recommendations for both hiring and professional development are presented to ensure that presidential assistants arrive with and are developing the necessary skills and competencies to be involved in shared leadership work towards equity and social justice.
