Vision 2021: Creativity at the Core Preparing Adult Learners for an Uncertain Workforce
Beattie, Ellen N.
COABE Journal: The Resource for Adult Education, v10 n1 Article 3 p38-50 Spr 2021
Since the Industrial Revolution in the early 19th century, technological advances have driven the workforce's skill set requirements. Rapidly evolving technology, including advanced automation and artificial intelligence, spark organizational needs to thrive in a time of uncertainty and accelerating change. Increasing demands from this highly technical and innovative workforce escalate the need for higher cognitive abilities, and explicitly, the creatively minded individual. This article explores creativity from an extensive review of the academic literature and scientific findings to offer a practical perspective for adult education leaders and instructors. Leaders will gain understanding of how infusing creativity drives innovative solutions to staff leadership, programmatic decisions, curricula choices, and learner support initiatives. Instructors will learn how to develop and foster learners' creativity to ensure alignment with this most in-demand workforce skill. Creativity has the power to build learners' skills and workplace preparedness in addition to engaging adult education programs to meet uncertain and evolving futures.
