"Saving the Planet One Science Lesson at a Time": Challenging the Traditional Notion of Sustainability and Climate Change Education
Strachan, Amy; Davey, Jemina
Primary Science, n175 p23-25 Nov-Dec 2022
Amy Strachan and Jemima Davey's new book, "Saving the Planet One Science Lesson at a Time" (Strachan and Davey, 2022) uses the UN Sustainable Development Goals (the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all; United Nations, 2015) as a framework to show that science knowledge and skills can support the achievement of the 17 overlapping global issues. Rather than seeing the primary science curriculum constrained to educating children about the climate emergency when teaching topics such as endangered species, the book outlines how science can support each of the 17 goals. Strachan and Davey argue that equipping children (and teachers) with the knowledge, skills and values to cope with climate and ecological emergency requires the principle of sustainability to be woven through the whole science curriculum (and the curriculum as a whole). They believe that the substantive and disciplinary knowledge developed in each science lesson gives children the opportunity to understand and care about their global home, while embedding space for critical and creative thinking in relation to global issues enables them to respond through responsible informed action and innovation.
