Transforming the Nation's Degree-Centric Postsecondary System to an Incremental Credential System
Zanville, Holly; Travers, Nan
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v54 n5 p4-11 2022
The U.S. centuries-old four-tiered degree system (associate, baccalaureate, masters, doctorate) can be insurmountable for many and hinders those who do not complete any given tier. The nation's credential landscape is increasingly confusing, with nearly one million unique credentials awarded from postsecondary education institutions and related providers, with rapid growth in new types of credentials in the last 5 years. The authors argue that a more equitable postsecondary education system is needed to capture and validate learning to enable all individuals to be recognized for what they know and can do. "?Credential As You Go" is calling for a nationally recognized incremental credentialing system to capture and validate uncounted learning that enables individuals to be recognized for what they know and can do.
