A Hands-On Introduction to Machine Learning for Calculus Students
Ravi, M. S.
Australian Mathematics Education Journal, v3 n3 p27-33 2021
This article shows how the exciting new field of Machine Learning can be effectively introduced in a standard calculus sequence, once the students have been introduced to functions of several variables. This is an opportunity to engage students in a discussion of an application of calculus to an emerging field that the students encounter in their everyday life; either through online advertising, or through increasingly sophisticated applications like image recognition, computer voice transcription, etc. In addition to the 'cool' factor which can help engage the students, this application could appeal to students outside the traditional STEM disciplines. In this article the author demonstrates how this application can illustrate the central mathematical ideas that students should gain from studying calculus.
