Reimagining Identity Development: Inspiring & Empowering Active Civic Leaders
Kermiet, Tara N.; Locke, Katy V.
New Directions for Higher Education, n195-196 p143-151 Fall-Win 2021
The vision of what Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement (CLDE) work encompasses within higher education has evolved from voter engagement efforts to broader approaches, which instill a sense of personal identity related to civic leadership. This chapter sheds light on the culture shift of CLDE work at one institution and the ways in which student leadership competencies inspire and empower civic identity through various programs, initiatives, and structures. Using this as a strategy to foster identity development will support students as they establish their capacities as active civic leaders and contribute to a thriving democracy. Our hope is to inspire colleges and universities to embed the student leadership competencies into programs, initiatives, and institutional structures, fostering the identity development of active civic leaders who contribute to a thriving democracy.
