Instruction to Engage Multilingual Learners with Grade-Level Content

In this article we identify ways to scaffold content-specific instruction to support your multilingual learners' academic language development. With the definition that academic language compromises of vocabulary, linguistic functions, and syntax, we share ways to integrate three instructional practices across your instruction. These practices include: 1) explicit instruction of key academic language, 2) the use of visuals to anchor grade-level instruction, and 3) frequent opportunities for content-based oral and written language practice.
