Stumbling Made Me a Better Online Instructor: 13 Tips toward Quality Improvement
Bickle, Marianne; Rucker, Ryan
Distance Learning, v18 n3 p14-22 2021
Online teaching is becoming increasingly more important and prevalent worldwide as the needs of the environment change. Technological advances certainly play a significant role in the ability to reach learners beyond the physical classroom. Reaching learners, however, does not necessarily equate with effective teaching and learning strategies. Educators can be experienced in face-to-face classroom teaching and still fall short of expectations in the online learning environment. Likewise, seasoned online educators can forget essential online pedagogy, thereby sacrificing learning outcomes. This case study documents how a seasoned online educator learned from her mistakes and built a better online course through 13 tips in 3 categories. The first category consists of course development. Course development includes the number of headings in the learning management system, syllabus, and learning modules. The second category consists of instructor interactions with students regarding how to use the learning management system. The third category consists of effective communication techniques required in an online learning environment.
