Multiplication with and in Nature
Baker, Katherine; Morrison, Scott A.; Herrmann, Alyssa
Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12, v114 n12 p933-939 Dec 2021
"Nature-based learning" is learning through exposure to nature and nature-based activities (Jordan and Chawla 2019). Nature and mathematics can be connected through teaching and learning with natural materials (objects from nature) or teaching and learning in outside spaces. In this article, the authors elaborate on the rationale for nature-based integration in mathematics, and share two lessons from a third-grade multiplication exploration as examples of nature-based learning, which benefit students' mathematical, interpersonal, and natural connections.
