Establishing School Library Leadership as a First-Year School Librarian
S. Michelle Dooney
Knowledge Quest, v50 n2 p38-42 Nov-Dec 2021
Many of today's new school librarians wonder how they can demonstrate their ability to lead in schools when they tend to have various roles and responsibilities within their schools. Beginning school librarians can establish leadership by assessing the needs of the school, attending grade-level planning meetings, mentoring new teachers, presenting and leading professional developments, and promoting the materials and programs that the school library offers. In this article, S. Michelle Dooney examines how she was able to establish a leadership role in her school as a trusted colleague who can create and collect data from needs assessments, present professional development sessions, mentor new teachers, and promote materials and programs that her school library provides.
