Dance Pedagogy Turned inside Out: The Development of an Inside-Out Prison Exchange Course and Relevance in a University Dance Program
Journal of Dance Education, v21 n4 p257-261 2021
This article follows a university dance educator's journey through shifting pedagogy to create a more equitable learning environment, turning traditional didactic dance education models inside out. Inside-Out Prison Exchange Pedagogy, designed to facilitate dialogue across differences, was utilized for a movement-based course of university students and incarcerated students learning together in a Philadelphia women's correctional facility. This reimagining of the dance classroom with an emphasis on creating equity, deepening a sense of civic awareness, and approaching movement as a universal language was utilized to build empathy and connect people with different life experiences.
