Quantitative Chemical Analysis of Fingerprints with Ion Chromatography
Lewis, Todd H.; Zacher, Brian
Journal of Chemical Education, v98 n12 p4009-4012 Dec 2021
A single latent fingerprint consists of ~50 µg of matter for which the anionic content often provides a differentiating characteristic between individuals. This forensic-themed, analytical chemistry experiment exploits this difference and has students employ ion-exchange chromatography to quantitatively analyze the anionic content of both authentic and "synthetic" fingerprints in order to identify, condemn, or exonerate "suspects".
