Addressing the Suffering Underneath
Porosoff, Lauren
Educational Leadership, v79 n2 p62-67 Oct 2021
When students misbehave, understanding the problem behind their actions can make all the difference in the effectiveness of teacher response. Teachers and students sometimes view the same behaviors differently. When students break school rules, teachers consider the behavior a problem. But for the student, that behavior is often a solution to some other problem. This article discusses: (1) responses to misbehavior; (2) compassionate responding; (3) compassion as a choice; (4) new ways to look at misbehavior; and (5) self-compassionate discipline.
