Problem Gambling Risk in a Sample of Canadian University Students: Understanding Motives and Associated 'Risky' Behaviors

College Student Journal, v53 n2 p199-215 Sum 2019
This study investigates some of the motivational and behavioral correlates of problem gambling behaviours in a Canadian university sample of emerging adults. This transitional developmental stage presents many new opportunities and challenges that may strain emerging adults' coping capacities, and is typically characterized by heightened tolerance for risky behaviours, which can increase susceptibility to addiction. Informed by General Strain Theory and the Generality of Deviance frameworks, this study explores whether problem gambling risk is associated with perceived stress, gambling motives and other risky behaviors. Multiple Regression results give limited support for General Strain Theory, as gambling to cope was associated with problem gambling risk, but perceived stress was not. Generality of Deviance was supported, as various 'risky' behaviours--unplanned or unprotected sexual relations, binge drinking, problem drinking, cigarette smoking, illegal drug use--were correlated with increased problem gambling risk. Education and prevention programs on campuses should address problem gambling in conjunction with other risky behaviors--especially problem drinking, and particularly targeted at young men who continue to be at greater risk for problem gambling than women.
