Coping with Stress: Gender Differences among College Students

Stress is a major issue for college students and the college years are considered one of the most stressful periods of a person's life. Gender differences in perceived stress and coping strategies were studied in a sample of undergraduate students (N = 409) using a cross-sectional, self-report format. MANOVA results indicated that men engaged in significantly more use of humor, whereas women utilized significantly more emotional- and instrumental support to cope with stress. Regression analyses revealed that the coping strategies of denial and self-blame significantly predicted perceived stress for women (p < 0.01), whereas behavioral disengagement and self-blame were significant predictors for men (p < 0.01). Health practitioners can use this information to help students to cultivate useful strategies to manage perceived stress, avoid maladaptive coping strategies, while being sensitive to gender differences.
