In this study, the researchers apply a phenomenological framework of place attachment to investigate the extent to which student life centers may become effective gathering places on university campuses and how specific spatial characteristics may influence students' senses of belonging, community identification, and perception of the university as an extension of the broader experience economy. Results indicate that a combination of two major factors may contribute to and facilitate the formation of place attachment: (1) spatial-design characteristics (proximity to the main entrance, location of functional areas, ease of navigation, openness and visual accessibility, functional pliancy of spaces, flexibility and adjustability of furniture and other interior elements, exterior views, and visual aesthetics and perceived sophistication); and (2) social ingredients (higher user density, richness of space programming, and direct student involvement and autonomy in running the facility).
