The Everyday Magic of Positive Education
Hurst, Julie
Childhood Education, v97 n5 p30-37 2021
Positive Education is the name given to Positive Psychology when it is applied in schools. It is an evidence-based discipline with decades of research underpinning its practices. All over the world, more and more schools are realizing its benefits for both pupils and staff. It increases well-being, fosters greater resilience, "and" supports academic achievement. It does all of this without the need for special equipment or a huge investment in time -- which is why the Work Life Balance Centre's Positive Education training programs are called Everyday Magic. Children learn how their brains work, with a focus on managing their feelings and developing successful learning strategies. Power poses to increase confidence before tests become part of the normal classroom routine. Children are guided toward understanding how savoring happy moments can increase the positive emotions they feel, as do expressing gratitude and carrying out acts of kindness. These activities are also stressed because they help develop coping strategies for difficult moments. This article discusses the model and framework behind Positive Education and offers some simple exercises to try in the classroom.
