Montessori: A Promising Practice for Young Learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder

More than 120 years ago, Dr. Maria Montessori implemented an individualized curriculum rooted in meeting the needs and building on the strengths of children (Montessori, 1964). Currently, children from infancy through adolescence attend Montessori schools in both private and public settings. Though no statistics have been compiled on the number of children with autism in Montessori settings, children with autism comprise 9% of children and youth served through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (The United States Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, 2016). This article describes how the Montessori approach to education supports children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Caring relationships and the development of independence, foundations of the Montessori philosophy, are described through three vignettes. The authors will address evidence-based practices for children with ASD, from the Council for Exceptional Children's Division for Early Childhood (DEC), in the context of Montessori principles.
