Mysore Ashtanga Yoga: So Very Montessori
Krever, Marcy K.
Montessori Life: A Publication of the American Montessori Society, v31 n4 p54-55 Win 2020
Walking into her first Mysore Ashtanga yoga class 7 years ago, Marcy Krever encountered an almost-silent room, filled with students trickling in on their own time, each doing their own practice at their own pace. It looked like an amalgam of a richly orchestrated ballet and acrobatics. It also resembled the highly individualized, dynamic, harmonious community of a Montessori classroom. Ashtanga is a highly structured style of yoga with 6 series: Primary, Intermediate, and 4 levels of Advanced. Each has its own sequence of poses ("asanas"), which build upon the previous ones in terms of difficulty. Mysore is a form of Ashtanga named after a small city of the same name in southern India, where, in 1948, yogi and scholar Sri K. Pattabhi Jois opened the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute, which embodied his approach to the practice. In this brief article, Krever discusses eight surprising parallels between the practice of Mysore Ashtanga yoga and Montessori education.
