The Courage to Do Less: Using Observation to Slow Down, Let Go, and Set Your Students Free to Learn
Mann, Claudia
Montessori Life: A Publication of the American Montessori Society, v33 n3 p32-39 Fall 2021
Montessori was very specific about the value of observation. Observation may feel like a never-ending chore--a routine that is difficult to fit into the day that results in data that is difficult to use once collected. No matter the reason, observation can inspire feelings of discomfort, inadequacy, and confusion. Viewed from this perspective, it's no wonder observation may fall further and further down the "must-do" list. So how, then, do teachers encourage themselves to make room for this essential part of their Montessori practice? What steps can teachers take to become the precise scientist and thoughtful saint through observation, as Dr. Montessori directed? In this article, the author offers the following suggestions to answer these questions: (1) do less; (2) slow down; (3) let go; and (4) set students free to learn.
