Journal of Alcohol and Drug Education, v65 n1 p9-21 Apr 2021
Adolescence marks a transitional phase between childhood and adulthood, in which engagement to the maladaptive behaviors is more likely to occur. Alcohol and substance use among adolescents is of particular concern because it may lead to multiple forms of injuries, hospitalizations, and premature mortality. With the wider availability of the internet, the use of social media is nearly universal among adolescents. Previous research has attempted to conceptualize the ways by which social media (SM) influences the behaviors and mental health outcomes among adolescents. Reportedly, adolescents with higher engagement with social media were nearly 2.5 times more likely to experience psychological and emotional sensitivities. Several factors of social media use (SMU), including patterns, individual characteristics, cyberbullying, and peer influence were studied, however, deciphering interactions with alcohol and substance use will provide valuable insight to develop targeted public health interventions to control modifiable behavioral risk factors among adolescents. Against this backdrop, this commentary aims to examine the impact of social media on substance use and other concomitant behaviors and discusses implications for research to improve health education to control risky behaviors among adolescents.
