Leadership Behaviors of Effective Athletic Coaches: A Case Study
Boyd, G. Allen; Boyd, Ruth A.
Journal of Ethnographic & Qualitative Research, v15 n1 p1-16 Fall 2020
Prior research in the field of sport leadership has determined that effective athletic coaches exhibit leadership behaviors that are consistent in nature. Three types of leader knowledge provided the conceptual framework for this study: (1) professional knowledge, or the ability to teach specific sport skills; (2) interpersonal knowledge, or the ability to create and maintain relationships; and (3) intrapersonal knowledge, or the ability to learn from one's own practice. Through the present qualitative, interview-based case study, we gave public school administrators a voice in describing leadership behaviors of effective interscholastic athletic coaches who they employed, supervised, and evaluated. During data analysis of the transcripts, three themes emerged: teaching, learning, and caring. Within each theme, multiple categories were examined. Through the present research, we offer a model for individual interscholastic athletic coaches who actively pursue professional growth in leadership behaviors and who exhibit the attributes of a life-long learner, benefitting not only themselves but also the student-athletes with whom they interact.
