This essay assesses barriers and suggests understandings that can lead to innovative teaching of history. A core design is recommended which emphasizes the continuity and consequences of historical events, to the exclusion of rigid chronology. The community college is seen as a particularly appropriate institution for initiation of educational innovation. (NHM)
