White People, Transform Ourselves!
Bresciani Ludvik, Marilee
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v53 n3 p37-41 2021
In reaction to the murder of George Floyd this past summer, Marilee Bresciani Ludvik attended a university-wide teach-in designed to better equip us as a community to embody anti-racist behavior in and out of the classroom. It included first-person direct self-report narratives from two very successful African American female professors who shared their profound pain and suffering as African American women, university professors, mentors, and a mother. The teach-in also included a list of behavioral don'ts from two additional African American male colleagues, a list the participants were invited to adopt (Villodas et al., n.d.). While these lists may be useful for promoting awareness, they often fall short of enacting lasting organizational transformation. Without white people's commitment to cultivating inner awareness, the risk of performance behaviors is possible, and commitment to consistent and genuine antiracist reform is at risk. The article also includes resources to increase personal awareness and cultivate compassionate action for organizational transformation that feeds increased personal awareness and accountability for reparation.
