Health Disparities with a Social Justice Perspective: Year in Review
Guttman-Lapin, Danielle; Proctor, Sherrie L.
Communique, v49 n8 p1, 32-33 Jun 2021
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) Social Justice Committee (SJC) chose the theme of health disparities as the focus of the committee's work for the 2020-2021 school year. The pandemic underscored the importance of this theme and school psychologists' understanding of health disparities through a social justice lens. Although health disparities as a construct was likely familiar to many school psychologists, there was a dearth of resources available about health disparities specifically tailored for school psychologists, especially resources highlighting a social justice framework and a historical context (Proctor et al., 2020). The purpose of this article is to reflect on articles that appeared in the "Communiqué" health disparities series. This article also introduces the SJC's focus for the next academic year, which the authors hope will be useful as the nation moves out of the pandemic, and school psychologists seek ways to help schools support those children and communities most impacted begin to heal and gain greater access to systems that support their overall well-being.
