A Holistic Bibliometric Overview of the Student Engagement Research Field
Journal of Further and Higher Education, v45 n4 p540-557 2021
This paper seeks to offer a better understanding of the existing literature regarding student engagement (SE), specifically at the higher education (HE) level. It provides an updated and holistic perspective based on compilation, organisation, and systematisation of all relevant SEHE research articles published from 1998 to 2018. The methodology applied in this study is based on bibliometric analysis techniques, which are increasingly being used as a means of supplementing the subjective evaluation of bibliographic literature reviews. By conducting a descriptive bibliometric analysis, the study reveals patterns in journals, articles, and authors that will aid future research. The study also provides a holistic overview of the SEHE research area through science mapping analysis and the construction of a complete research road map, which offers useful information for academics and practitioners seeking to analyse and explore this particular field of research.
