Improving the Interaction Design of Apps for Children with Special Educational Needs
Grane, Mariona; Crescenzi-Lanna, Lucrezia
Journal of Educational Multimedia and Hypermedia, v30 n2 p139-164 Apr 2021
Educators and families recognize the educational potential of digital games for children and acquire them despite a lack of criteria for their selection. This research focuses on finding criteria of interactive design of mobile Apps aimed at young children with functional diversity. The methodology analyses a sample of 55 apps, rated as good or very good by independent international classifications, designed to attend different special educational needs. A previously validated observation instrument is used to analyse content, activities and the visual and interaction design, with emphasis on accessibility and adequacy to the child development. The results of the study expose a lack of knowledge regarding the design of applications for children with functional diversity, their needs and their specific skills. Finally, the study concludes by examining the implications of these findings in the design of Apps and the possible effect on their use.
