Emotional Labor and School Psychology
Little, Jill M.
Communique, v49 n7 p10, 12 May 2021
Emotional labor is the effort and emotions needed "when personal emotion runs counter to those expected and required. It is emotional labor because there is emotional dissonance, (i.e., a mismatch between expected and felt emotions)" (Tunguz, 2020). Emotional labor also refers to the actions taken by employees to meet company standards or policies (display rules) by either purposefully hiding or displaying their emotions (Kerr & Brown, 2016). Display rules or policies guide employee expressions so that positive interactions are created, customer satisfaction increases and, as a result, the organization is looked upon favorably (Hochschild, 2012). Emotional labor has been extensively studied in relation to a variety of public service organizations, including education. This article focuses on emotional labor and its connection to school psychology since it has not yet been fully explored, as very few studies exist that have investigated how school psychologists use emotional labor and its impact on the field.
