Challenges in Fostering Intercultural Competencies from the Perspectives of Stakeholders in a Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada Program
Interchange: A Quarterly Review of Education, v52 n1 p57-78 Mar 2021
This research intends to add to the literature on the topic of challenges faced in fostering intercultural competencies (ICs) in Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) programs. This single qualitative case study explores the challenges associated with fostering ICs. Semi-structured interviews with the program administrators, the instructors, and students, in-depth analysis of program documents and field notes from classroom observations were the data sources for this study. Challenges that students, instructors and program administrators faced in fostering ICs included language, time, resources, and knowledge. Stakeholders in the LINC program, as well as policymakers of LINC programs, researchers, and practitioners may find these findings and recommendations useful for addressing challenges that are faced in fostering ICs.
