Comprehensive Approach to Character: Flower Mound Elementary School
Nurre, Gayle; Joeris, Tina
Journal of Character Education, v16 n2 p33-36 2020
Flower Mound Elementary, a public school in the Lewisville Independent School District, believes it is a responsibility to educate the whole child. Their goal is to academically prepare young students and help them internalize moral values as well as build their character. To make this successful takes very different pedagogical strategies and more than just an academic focus. The school's character education program focuses on self-improvement and always becoming a better version of one's self with lessons, self-reflections, and parent education to connect home and school. The school's character leadership cohort meets bimonthly to review reflection data, classroom implementations, and to discuss the next steps or improvements. By using the approach described in this article, the school believes it will give the students not only the best academic possibilities but also will help develop lifelong practices leading toward healthy and well-balanced civic-minded adults and will positively address the social and emotional issues of children.
