Solving Linear Inequalities via a Visual Approach
Mahmood, Munir; Vale, Colleen
Australian Mathematics Education Journal, v2 n3 p23-28 2020
The visual method in this paper solves linear inequalities in one variable by considering them initially as two competing linear expressions, each of which is then expressed as a linear equation. When the solution of these two linear equations exist, it is viewed as a highlighted area or a line. These linear equations convey the intended visual effect with the use of different colours which may enhance students' cognitive level of understanding. The article theoretically suggests a pedagogical approach to teaching by extending this idea to graphing a linear inequality in two variables and finally to a system of linear inequalities in two variables.
