Alston, Geleana D.; Smith, Shon D.; Collins, Danya
New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education, n166 p69-80 Sum 2020
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have a history of providing a welcoming space for veterans and is important for HBCUs to continue fostering an affirming educational space for this special student population. This chapter focuses on current veteran-friendly practices within HBCUs. Specifically, we provide an overview of the historical footprint of HBCUs and military education. In addition, we illuminate six HBCUs that are distinguished within the 2020-2021 Military Friendly® listing. We conclude this chapter with future considerations for HBCUs as they continue enrich their campuses to affirm veterans, servicemembers, and their families.
