Exploring LMS User Activity Data and Performance Measures from Virtual Field Experience Online Modules for Preservice Teachers
Abbitt, Jason; Watt, Sarah
Journal of Technology and Teacher Education, v28 n3 p487-517 2020
This study investigates the relationship between measures of user activity within a Learning Management System (LMS) and student performance during a series of Virtual Field Experience (VFE) online learning modules. Implemented in a graduate-level course on teaching methods for learners with mild/moderate disabilities, each VFE activity was centered around an observation task using real-world classroom videos. Data analysis focused on measures derived from LMS user activity logs and measures of the accuracy of student observations made while watching the videos. Results suggest that relationships existed between measures of user activity levels and accuracy during the first VFE, yet this relationship diminished in subsequent similar activities. Additionally, differences were found in student achievement according to measures of the time span relative to the assignment due dates. Recommendations are included regarding potential enhancements and revisions to the learning design of the VFE activities.
