The Thinking Classroom: An Exciting Transformation for Math Instruction
Winters, Stacy
Childhood Education, v96 n4 p50-53 2020
In this article, former high school teacher and K-12 math supervisor Stacy Winters questions if her approach to high school math instruction was what was best for student learning. After observing elementary classrooms and the way the teachers were able to engage the students in student centered, hands on, interactive, and fun math lessons, she wondered if it would be possible to apply the principles of elementary math instruction to the high school level? This article describes how Winters accomplished this goal using the teachings and philosophies of Peter Liljedahl to create learning spaces that were hands on, interactive, exciting, and fun at any level. By adapting Liljedahl's Thinking Classroom, she brought a new vision for mathematics teaching and learning to Chatham High School. She discusses how the change was funded, how the new learning environment changed the student experience, and how it changed the teacher experience. [This article was written with Mallory Lynn.]
