Searching for Equity in Education: A Critical Ethnographic Exploration in Cuba
Fox, Brandon L.; Byker, Erik J.
Journal of Ethnographic & Qualitative Research, v9 n3 p183-195 Spr 2015
This critical, focused ethnographic research article is an emergent qualitative study that explores the phenomenon of equity in Cuba. The study's primary purpose is to identify the processes of developing humane values that promote social equity in a society largely influenced by neoliberal global capitalism. We employed a Marxist Humanist framework to explore three guiding questions: (a) What are the identified values in the Cuban National Education System (CNES)? (b) What values in Cuban society promote social equity? and (c) How does the Cuban National Education System promote equity? Ethnographic data exploring Cuba and the Cuban National Education System were collected and analyzed. Findings from this study offer theoretical affirmation of the principles and aims of revolutionary critical pedagogy (Allman, 2001; McLaren, 2005). The article argues that the comprehensive framework of Cuban values work in concert to promote social equity. The outcomes of this study identified six specific ways that the Cuban National Education System promotes social equity and Marxist Humanism.
