Culturally Relevant Special Education Curriculum for Children with Autism in China
McDevitt, Seung Eun; Jiang, Hui; Xu, Yuanyue; Pei, Di
Childhood Education, v96 n3 p56-61 2020
Special education schools in China and other developing countries are increasingly adapting curricula and approaches developed in Western countries to serve young children with disabilities. Yet not enough is known about how effective these curricula are in different cultural contexts and what difficulties teachers may face in implementing them. The Dami and Xiaomi Child Development Center (Dami) is an early childhood special education school in China. Since its establishment as a center-based service provider in 2016, Dami has enrolled about 600 children under the age of 6 who have autism and other developmental disabilities. The authors share the challenges the center has faced in adapting Western-developed curricula and its recent development and implementation of a culturally relevant curriculum for teaching social skills to young Chinese children with autism.
