Journal of Child & Adolescent Substance Abuse, v28 n4 p229-237 2019
Purpose: The main purpose of this study was to develop strategies for the reduction of alcohol and substance abuse among university-going adolescents in Southern Ethiopia. Setting: The study took place in two selected universities in Southern Ethiopia. Methods: An explorative descriptive contextual design and qualitative approach was used for the study. Stratified random sampling technique was used to select 39 undergraduates and 16 university staff from two purposively selected universities. Population: Adolescents aged between 15 and 19 years and university staff members aged 25 to 57 years of age. Research Findings: Almost all the participants indicated that alcohol and substances, such as Khat and Shisha were widely available near the university campuses. This allows for easy accessibility to substances. Expected outcomes: The researchers envisioned that the strategies developed, if applied by relevant authorities such as policy makers and teachers, would assist in the reduction of alcohol and substance abuse by adolescents. among adolescents in Ethiopia and other parts of Africa with similar situations.
