This article begins the process of describing the intellectual structure of the relatively new academic field of Japanese popular culture studies. It identifies trends in citations in the field's leading publication over a 10-year period and the top-ranking sources of citations, and it breaks down the results further by source format and language of the cited sources. The results can be compared with those of other recent citation studies in the humanities. Subject specialist librarians might use them for collection development and to assist scholars and students with identifying authoritative sources to consult in their research.
