"It's Like Growing a Deaf Identity in a Barren Field": Continuing the Conversation about Developing 21st Century Culturally Deaf Identities
Singer, Steve
SoJo Journal: Educational Foundations and Social Justice Education, v4 n1 p1-16 2018
This qualitative interview study looked at the experiences of 8 Deaf adults who had general education placements in secondary school and who developed Deaf cultural identities in adulthood. The research focused on descriptive characteristics of 21st century Deaf acculturation of this population, which represents a substantial proportion of Deaf students today. Inductive thematic coding yielded 3 key themes: (1) operationalization of Deaf culture, (2) A broader range of socioeconomic stratification among Deaf people, and (3) importance of higher education with a critical mass of Deaf people. The discussion includes overlaying Holcomb's (2012) four values of Deaf people with the findings to frame the participants' experiences and suggests characteristics of contemporary Deaf identity development. This research suggests that increased agency and access to resources has led to Deaf cultural progress and to the Deaf identities that form within it, while still maintaining the traditional values of the people.
