"The Connecting Carolina" Teaching with Primary Sources Program
Manfra, Meghan
Social Education, v81 n2 p109-111 Mar-April 2017
Colson Whitehead's acclaimed book, "The Underground Railroad," follows Cora, a runaway slave seeking the nearly impossible goal of freedom. The fictionalized account of a runaway slave girl resonates with a reading of Harriet Jacobs's true account in "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl." One of the most influential works of its time and one of the most widely read slave narratives, "Incidents" describes Jacobs's experiences as a female slave from her perspective as a daughter, mother, and as a runaway. Today, Jacobs is commemorated in the newly opened Smithsonian Museum of African American History as well as in Edenton, North Carolina, where she hid for nearly seven years before escaping north. In this article, the digitized version of her account is referred to as an example of the ways in which teachers can integrate digital history material in the classroom to teach first and "second order" historical concepts.
