The "Detroit Tests of Learning Aptitude" has been in use for more than three quarters of a century (Baker & Leland, 1935). Its longevity in the field speaks to its popularity as a broad measure of cognitive abilities. Its most recent iteration, in the form of the "Detroit Tests of Learning Abilities--Fifth Edition" (DTLA-5; Hammill, McGhee, & Ehrler, 2018), stays true to the purpose of the original test while providing important theoretical and psychometric updates. The test is designed for assessing the cognitive abilities of students ages 6:0 to 17:11. The DTLA-5 could be used by practitioners as part of a comprehensive assessment for determining eligibility as well as to gain an understanding of a student's cognitive strengths and weaknesses compared with peers. Following a description of DTLA-5, this article reviews DTLA-5's technical adequacy (development--test construction, item analysis, and standardization sample; reliability; and validity).
