Catcalling and the College Classroom: A Model for Teaching Students about Street Harassment
Bond, Candis E.
Feminist Teacher: A Journal of the Practices, Theories, and Scholarship of Feminist Teaching, v27 n2-3 p211-232 2017
In this essay, the author will discuss background on the topic of street harassment within the context of the United States, the theoretical and pedagogical foundations of her course design, and outcomes from the class. She will also share ideas for modifying and improving the course. Her syllabus and assignments were highly experimental, since there were no models for her to draw from, so she does not claim to offer the best way to teach a course on street harassment. Rather, her aim is to provide one possible model for other instructors as they consider teaching similar classes or integrating a unit on street harassment into other syllabi. While many claim that street harassment is trivial and does not deserve a place within academia, she argues that it is sexist, classist, racist behavior that directly impacts women's mobility in the United States and globally. As such, it is a behavior that should be rigorously researched and reported on, and it is a topic that should be addressed within women's and gender studies classrooms and beyond.
