The Input-Based Incremental Approach to German Vocabulary: A Sample Lesson Based on the Film "Barbara"
Fichtner, Friederike; Barcroft, Joe
Unterrichtspraxis/Teaching German, v52 n1 p82-102 Spr 2019
Input-based incremental (IBI) vocabulary instruction is an approach that emphasizes presentation of target vocabulary in the input and the gradual development of multiple aspects of vocabulary knowledge over time. This article demonstrates how the IBI approach can be utilized to facilitate the acquisition of German vocabulary as part of content-based language instruction focused on film. The first section of the article presents the IBI approach, its theoretical underpinnings, and research findings that led to its development. The second section offers a full-scale IBI lesson that focuses on a pivotal scene in the film "Barbara" (2012), directed by Christian Petzold. The lesson illustrates how each of the 10 IBI principles for effective vocabulary instruction can be incorporated while maintaining focus on content of the film and providing learners with opportunities to increase their understanding of the sociopolitical environment of the former German Democratic Republic and its effects on interpersonal relationships.
