Identifying and Selecting Evidence-Based Early Intervention Programs for Elementary Students Displaying Physical Aggression
Klumpner, Susan; Woolley, Michael E.
School Social Work Journal, v42 n2 p21-38 Spr 2018
In this era of accountability, evidenced-based practice, and response to intervention, it behooves school social workers to identify and implement theory-informed and research-supported interventions to address school-level struggles that negatively impact school success for at-risk students. To that end, school social workers need to develop the knowledge and skills to search for and select evidenced-based interventions to implement in a specific school with a specific population of students. We offer a process for such a search and then provide an example that identifies fourteen evidence-based prevention and intervention programs for children struggling with early start aggressive behaviors. Of the fourteen programs, nine were chosen for inclusion based on delivering programming in a school-based format and design for prekindergarten through elementary school students. Those nine programs are individually discussed, and sources of information are provided. Within a response to intervention framework, each program is classified as either a universal/primary prevention program or a targeted/secondary intervention program. Finally, we offer a set of criteria to be considered in searching for and selecting such manualized evidence-based prevention or early intervention programs for implementation in schools.
