Ambiguous Loss in Schools: Guidelines for Practitioners

Although schools are making the effort to support students grieving the death of a loved one, there is a large population of grieving students who have experienced ambiguous loss from causes other than death and who may need support. Ambiguous loss or a loss without closure can leave a person searching for answers, thus complicating and delaying the grief process. This article will use case vignettes to demonstrate how ambiguous loss can present in schools and will describe the use of a grief and loss peer support group as a promising treatment modality. Childhood bereavement and ambiguous loss theory will be reviewed.
