Increasing Access to Mental Health Services in Schools through Community-Engaged Research: Results from a One-Year Pilot Project

School Social Work Journal, v39 n1 p73-89 Nov 2014
It is estimated that as many as 20 percent of school-aged children in the United States have diagnosable mental health conditions, and schools are the primary location where children receive mental health services. Because of limited resources, school-community partnerships are recommended in the literature as a best practice for providing comprehensive school-based mental health services, but few empirical studies of such partnerships have been published. The current article describes a school-based mental health (SBMH) pilot project that was developed in an urban area using a community-engaged approach to build a partnership among education, mental health, and university systems. Descriptive results of the pilot study are presented, including a comparison of attendance, discipline, and academic outcomes between the pilot SBMH school and a matched school without these services. The article concludes with lessons learned that may be helpful to both urban and rural communities seeking similar partnerships.
