Forty-four million disabled Americans comprise a large minority group that has joined the civil rights movement to address the social, economic, and political injustices affecting their human rights. Architectural, transportation, and attitudinal barriers place handicapped individuals at a disadvantage in obtaining adequate education, equal housing, recreational opportunities, or employment.
